Non-HDL = Total Cholesterol - HDLClinical Pearls
A superior predictor of cardiovascular risk compared to LDL alone, because it accounts for VLDL and other atherogenic particles. It is particularly useful when triglycerides are elevated (≥ 200 mg/dL).
Limitations
While mathematically simple, clinical target goals for Non-HDL vary depending on the patient's underlying cardiovascular risk (e.g., a patient with a prior MI might have a Non-HDL goal of < 100 mg/dL).
