Ganzoni Equation (Iron Deficit)

Calculates the total IV iron dose needed for iron deficiency anemia.

Parameters

g/dL
g/dL
mg

Ganzoni Equation (Iron Deficit) Result

--
FormulaTotal Iron Deficit (mg) = Weight (kg) × [Target Hb - Actual Hb] × 2.4 + Iron Depot (mg)

Clinical Pearls

Ensures full therapeutic repletion of both circulating red blood cell hemoglobin and reticuloendothelial iron stores in severe or oral-intolerant Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA).

Limitations

The Ganzoni equation can sometimes underestimate iron requirements in heavy patients or inflammatory states (CKD, IBD), where fixed-dose regimens (e.g. 1000-1500 mg) are now often used.
