Gait Speed Test (10-Meter Walk Test / 10MWT)

Measures walking speed (the "6th vital sign") to assess mobility, fall risk, and frailty.

Parameters

Gait Speed Test (10-Meter Walk Test / 10MWT) Result

FormulaGait Speed (m/s) = Timed Distance (meters) / Time Taken (seconds)

Clinical Pearls

Predicts 5- and 10-year survival in older adults with accuracy comparable to age, chronic disease burden, and cardiovascular risk factors combined.

Limitations

Acceleration and deceleration phases should be excluded from timing by using a 2-meter run-up and 2-meter slowdown buffer.
