Formula
AIP = log₁₀(TG / HDL). Note: Inputs in mg/dL are converted to molar concentrations (mmol/L) prior to the calculation.Clinical Pearls
AIP correlates closely with LDL particle size (an inversely proportional relationship). A high AIP indicates a higher proportion of small, dense LDL particles, which are highly atherogenic.
Limitations
While a powerful prognostic marker, it is not yet incorporated into all major societal guidelines (like the ACC/AHA pooled cohort equations) for prescribing statins.
